Orthotic or inserts can significantly relieve symptoms caused by common
foot problems.
An orthosis can support an area of collapse, cushion an area of pressure,
accommodate fixed deformity, limit motion, equalize limb length, and reduce
shear of the foot in the shoe. When walking, the normal foot changes from a
supple, shock-absorbing structure to rigid to push-off. Patients with high arches there feet is rigid and lack shock absorption. Patients with flatfeet have a extremely supple and often
are not effective for push-off.
Many types of simple orthotic devices can
be dispensed directly from the physician's office or are available at
drugstores, sporting goods stores, and shoe stores. Custom orthoses are for more effective in treating foot pain and pathologies.
