Painful corn!!!!

Calluses or Corns
are an area of skin that thickens after exposure to repetitive frictional forces in order to protect the skin.  Calluses are painful.

Factors within the body that may lead to the formation of corns and calluses.
  • Bony prominences or structural deformities, such as hammertoes and bunions
  • Faulty foot function such as overpronation or oversupination
  • Damaged sweat glands, scars, warts(plantar verruca)
If home remedies fail to eliminate the corns and calluses and they continue to be painful or bothersome, consult your doctor. Anyone with diabetes, loss of sensation or poor circulation should seek medical attention earlier because of a higher risk for infection.

Podiatrists will take X-rays of your feet to look at underlying bony structures that may be the cause of the corns and calluses.

Periodic shaving or cutting off the hardened area on the skin (debridement) by surgical means or with medicines that break up hardened areas of skin such as 40% urea (keratolytic agents)

Surgically removing areas of protruding bone where corns and calluses form and/or correcting the underlying deformity

Brook Lopez foot injury

Brooklyn Nets center Brook Lopez underwent surgery Jan 4 to repair a 5th metatarsal fracture. The majority of the metatarsal bones heal with nonsurgical treatment; however some will requires more extensive immobilization and surgical fixation. Swelling and pain on weight bearing are common symptoms. Stress fractures usually occur after a sudden increase in activity, such as a new training regimen, change in running surface, or even prolonged walking.

Podiatrist can X-ray your injured foot and diagnosis of this injury. A stress fracture of a metatarsal may not show up on radiographs for 2 to 3 weeks. If this problem is not addressed in time or not properly treated a malunion and nonunion are possible. Malunion with painful plantar callosities under the metatarsal heads or transfer lesions under the neighboring metatarsal heads may occur if there is displacement or shortening of the metatarsal.

Treatment includes the use of a short leg cast, fracture brace, or wooden-soled shoe. Weight bearing is permitted in most kinds of injuries but there are exceptions. Tenderness at the fracture site will diminish as the fracture heals. A fracture of the first metatarsal and some 5th metatarsal base may require surgery. Multiple metatarsal fractures and displaced fractures may require either closed or surgical reduction.

Justin Bieber's broken foot

Last month

Several years ago
The pop superstar broke his foot while playing an impromptu game of soccer at the Parrot Cay private island resort in Turks and Caicos this past weekend.

CAMboots, also known as fracture boots or walking boots, are a great option for rehabilitating injuries that foot and ankle specialists and/or podiatrists offer in their offices.  As seen on Justin Bieber's picture here, they offer the advantage of permitting the patient to walk as the injury heals. The device immobilizes and protect the injured foot while minimizing associated morbidities.

As you can see in the picture of Shia LaBeouf, CAM boots also come in short leg sizes.  The shorter size gives more comfort to the patient without making them feel like a "Transformer".  Usually use to treatment of forefoot injuries.

The CAM boot that Reese Witherspoon is shown using offers the option of inflatable air bladders.  This are helpful to help control swelling and provide additional immobilization.
