An Ankle Fracture is a break in a ankle bones. Fractures in the ankle can range from simple to very serious  (avulsion injuries, a pieces of bone pulled off, or severe shattering tibia, fibula, or both).

Ankle fractures are caused by a bad ankle rolling, worse than of an ankle sprain.

People feel pain on the ankle, swelling, they can get a blisters, or bruising.  Some other feel a bone protruding through their skin.

If you are having one of this right now get it check by someone that knows about ankles, or the ER.  Get also a x-rays

You would have to Rest, put some Ice: Compress and Elevate it. You'll have to even get a cast or one of those walking boots.  The doctor will give you some pills.

If the ankle is out of wack you'll have to get surgery, put it back in place or calm that pain.

Nasty fracture on the NBA

Paul George injury the distal fracture fragment protrude through the skin and other soft tissues.  Open fractures often involve much more damage to the surrounding muscles, tendons, and ligaments. They have a higher risk for complications and take a longer time to heal.

The tibia, or shinbone, is the most common fractured long bone in your body. It supports most of your weight and is an important part of both the knee joint and ankle joint.  When broken bones break through the skin, they are called open or compound fractures.

This fracture was stabilized with an external fixation then an Intramedullary nail was used for final fixation.  This is the current most popular form of surgical treatment for tibial fractures is intramedullary nailing. The rod passes across the fracture to keep it in position. Intramedullary nailing allows for strong, stable, full-length fixation.

Salsa dancing shoes

Salsa dancing gives your muscles, joints, and bones a really good workout. It can help delay osteoporosis and arthritis.

Salsa dancing shoes should be stylish ( of course), lightweight, comfortable, flexible, made of real suede and/or leather, and extra cushioning in the sole.

The foot should have more freedom of movement while  keeping the heel “locked” in place.

Leather/suede soles to give enough amount of slip-and-grip while allowing your foot to pivot freely. Avoid rubber-soled shoes.

The dance shoe size should be the same as your street shoe size. If your foot is narrow, you should go down 1/2 a size. If your foot is wider you should go up 1/2 a size .

Gentlemen typically wear suede or leather shoes with a low heel. For Latin Ballroom the heel should be slightly higher.

For ladies, an open toe heel or strappy sandal is best for the Latin and Salsa dancing. This allows greater movement of the toes, while giving balance and creating a clean leg line.

Traditional Ankle Strap provides the least amount of foot security.  X-Strap (around arch) are great for newer dancers, this strap style anchors your foot to the arch of the shoe, avoiding ankle twisting and providing an ideal amount of support and stability

Heel sizes can be as low as 0.5″ or as high as 4″. The most common heel sizes are between 2″-3″. Higher heels give more shape to the leg.  For beginners, it is recommended to start with a 2.5″ heel height.

The skinny stiletto heel cause more pressure to the ball of the foot and less balance.  Cuban heels are the lowest and thickest heels and distribute weight over more of the foot.   The flare heel has a skinny center with a slightly flares out out the bottom, providing a bit more stability over the stiletto heel.

My female patients love heels

From a kitten heel of 1.5 inches to a 5 inches stiletto heel.  My female patients love heels.

On a APMA survey 42% of women admitted that they weared a shoe they liked even if it gave them discomfort but that night was one on a life time you were looking fabulous, everyone was staring at your heel and your were unstoppable .

High heels tend to give the aesthetic illusion of longer, more slender legs.

Gucci Heel clasification
  • "low heel": < 2.5 inches
  • "mid heels": 2.5 - 3.5 inches
  • "high heel": > 3.6 inches

Some history
Mediæval Europeans wore wooden-soled patten shoes.  Persian horse riders used high heels for better stirrups hold.

Late 1990s lower heels and even flats predominated.  Since the WWII high heels have fallen in and out of popular fashion trend.  Lower heels were preferred during the late 1960s and early 1970s as well, but higher heels returned in the late 1980s and early 1990s

Cons? Ummmmm
  • Can POTENTIALLY cause foot and tendon painful, rigid or sinewy: if a daily routine of stretching is not done
  • increase the likelihood of sprains and fractures: if there is lack of traction on the sole
  • You have hammer toes and bunions? blame the genes and your flip flop (men have bunions and hammertoes and the majority of them don't wear heels)
  • Can cause an unsteady gait: if is your first rodeo on those beautiful heel or you had too much EtOH
  • Can render the wearer unable to run: only if you wear planning to use your stilettos when chasing criminals
  • Can also agitate lower back pain: if you don't stretch those hamstrings
  • Can cause damage to soft floors: well is not your problem those people through cheap floor

Those heels
  • Accentuates the appearance of calves by changing the angle of the foot with respect to the lower leg
  • Gives you a more upright posture
  • Make the wearer appear taller
  • Make the legs appear longer
  • Make the foot appear smaller
  • Make the toes appear shorter
  • Make the arches of the feet higher and better defined
  • Improve the muscle tone
  • Improve access for people of short stature to sit upright with feet on floor instead of suspended, reach items on shelves.
Keep using those beautiful heel Dr Rolando Melendez will take care of the rest.

Smart socks

These smart socks and accompanying anklet come complete with an accelerometer, magnetic snaps, a Bluetooth brain, and pressure sensors to give their wearers metrics of all sorts.

Dubbed a “personal running coach,” the stockings are able to discern activity type as well as monitor heart rate, calories burned, foot landing, running cadence, and more. Not only is the anklet splash-proof, but the socks can be washed without compromising their embedded tech.

Nice shoes, nasty toes

A condition that usually affects the big toe or the fifth toe, which is characterised by loss of function of the interossei and lumbricale muscles resulting in overpowering of the flexor tendon with resultant overriding toe and depressed metatarsal heads, both prone to ulceration, soft tissue tears, digital dislocation or painful calluses.

Surgery is indicated in nearly every instance and will produce a corrected or improved result. The type of surgery--whether reefing, lengthening, or transposition of tendons, implant arthroplasty, or arthrodesis--is tailored to the underlying cause.  Management Dorsal and plantar-shaped incisions around the toe and extensor digitorum longus tenotomy and circumferential MTP joint release.

Painful corn!!!!

Calluses or Corns
are an area of skin that thickens after exposure to repetitive frictional forces in order to protect the skin.  Calluses are painful.

Factors within the body that may lead to the formation of corns and calluses.
  • Bony prominences or structural deformities, such as hammertoes and bunions
  • Faulty foot function such as overpronation or oversupination
  • Damaged sweat glands, scars, warts(plantar verruca)
If home remedies fail to eliminate the corns and calluses and they continue to be painful or bothersome, consult your doctor. Anyone with diabetes, loss of sensation or poor circulation should seek medical attention earlier because of a higher risk for infection.

Podiatrists will take X-rays of your feet to look at underlying bony structures that may be the cause of the corns and calluses.

Periodic shaving or cutting off the hardened area on the skin (debridement) by surgical means or with medicines that break up hardened areas of skin such as 40% urea (keratolytic agents)

Surgically removing areas of protruding bone where corns and calluses form and/or correcting the underlying deformity

Stephen Curry Ankle

Stephen Curry the Golden State Warrior Star and one of the best point guards of the league  suffered from repeated ankle injuries.  This is a very common condition on basketball players due to the nature of the game.  Last year January Carmelo Anthony missed some game due to the same problem.

The X-rays of Curry's ankle were taken and show negative finding of fracture.  The current problem his problem is commonly call, weak ankles or chronic ankle instability.

People with chronic ankle instability often complain of:

  • A repeated turning of the ankle, especially on uneven surfaces or when participating in sports
  • Persistent (chronic) discomfort and swelling
  • Pain or tenderness
  • The ankle feeling wobbly or unstable

When you sprain your ankle, the connective tissues (ligaments) are stretched or torn. The ability to balance is often affected. Each subsequent sprain leads to further weakening (or stretching) of the ligaments, resulting in greater instability and the likelihood of developing additional problems in the ankle.

Treatments include physical therapy and anti-inflammatory.  Bracing to gain support for the ankle and keep the ankle from turning. Bracing also helps prevent additional ankle sprains.

Surgery is based on the degree of instability or lack of response to non-surgical approaches. Surgery usually involves repair or reconstruction of the damaged ligament(s).
